Harry Bowling graduated from St. Joe Prep. in 1938.
He played football for three years. He went to Western Kentucky the
following fall on a football scholarship. Harry was vice president
of the Junior and Senior class. He won an OVC and S.I.A.A. in 1942.
Harry graduated from Western with a major in Biology in 1942, and
he reported to Quantico, VA to O.C.S. school right after graduation.
He spent 20 weeks at Quantico and came out as a Second Lieutenant
in the Marin Corps. He reported at once to the 1st Marine Division
at San Diego, California where he was assigned as a replacement at
Guadalcanal.
Harry took part in the bombing of four battles and was wounded at
Peleliu when shrapnel hit him in the face. He was hit by machine gun
fire through both legs at Okinawa. Harry left the Marine Corps in
1946 as a Major.
Harry became the first lay-coach and teacher at St. Joe Prep. in the
fall of 1947. He married and has five children-Laura, Bob, John, Mary,
and Steve. Harry went into the farm business and has finally decided
to retire at the age of 75.
