Dr. Charles B. Spalding       1943

Dr. Charles Boone Spalding, upon his induction into the St. Joe Prep. Hall of Fame in June 1999, is semi-retired with the Family Medical Center in Bardstown. He has been a physician for 44 years and Nelson County coroner for 30 those years.

He attended Bethlehem Grade School from 1932 to 1939 and St. Joe Prep. from 1939 to 1943. He was captain of the St. Joe football team in 1942 and was an honorable mention all-state player, competing in the East-West football game.

After graduation he was in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, serving as an ensign attached to the USS Fargo, the flagship in the Mediterranean Sea.

He graduated from the University of Louisville in 1949 and the U of L Medical School in 1953, serving his internship at U of L from 1953 to 1955. Dr. Spalding was certified with the American Board of Family Physicians in 1971.

He was named "Family Doctor of the Year" in 1980 and won the Catholic Schools Distinguished Alumni Award from the Archdiocese of Louisville in 1999. He's been president of the Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians and vice-president of the Kentucky Medical Association.

He is also a director of the Farmers Bank and Trust at Bardstown, president of the medical staff and served on the board of directors of Flaget Memorial Hospital from 1975-1980 and served on the Kentucky Board for Nursing Home Administrators from 1986-1989.

Dr. Spalding and his family are members of St. Joseph Parish in Bardstown. He served on the first lay board, has been on the board of St. Joseph Parish School and an usher, a minister and a member of the choir.

Dr. Spalding and his wife, Ellen, have eight children, Thomas W. Spalding III, Charles B Spalding Jr., Ellen Hatfield, Beth Spalding, Robert Neal Spalding, Matthew L. Spalding, Charlotte H. Spalding, and Mary Spalding.
